Richard Fawls practised at the Chancery Bar in London from 1975 to 2001. He was a Tenant at New Square Chambers (formerly 1 New Square), Lincoln’s Inn until 1998 when he joined the well-known Chancery chambers of Henry Harrod at 5 Stone Buildings, Lincoln’s Inn. His practice in the UK covered a wide range of Chancery and commercial work, in particular trust and probate litigation, shareholder and partnership disputes, personal and corporate insolvency and auditors and accountants negligence cases.

From 1990 to 1994 Richard Fawls was instructed by the UK Government as Counsel to Inspectors appointed under the Companies Act to investigate Atlantic Computers plc. In 1990-91 he was a joint-Inspector appointed by the UK Government under the Financial S​ervices Act to investigate suspected insider dealing in shares of a UK-listed financial services group.

Richard Fawls joined the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Government in 2002 as a Directorate-grade officer. He retired from the Hong Kong Government in 2011. During his time with the Department of Justice he worked on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters for the Government, as well as supervising a team of Government Counsel which handled revenue appeals, insider dealing and market misconduct cases, telecommunications cases and probate, charity and statutory will matters.

Richard Fawls represented the Hong Kong Insurance Authority on a number of applications for transfer of long-term insurance business.
